Special Topics in Asian American Studies; South Asian American Experience

This course will broadly cover the history of South Asians in the United States from colonial times until the present. We will look at South Asian participation in politics, the economy and the evolving culture of the US, particularly in reference to waves of anti-immigrant sentiment historically, and the Civil Rights Movement of the 60s. We will also discuss issues within South Asian American community such as the generational gap, marital and domestic violence, and LGBTQ voices, as well as the emerging cultural representations of South Asians in mainstream US culture.
