Culture Contact and Colonialism in the Americas

Anthropological approaches to the study of culture contact and colonialism. Particular emphasis is placed on archaeological and ethnohistorical approaches to the relationships between Native peoples and Europeans in North America from the 16th through 18th centuries. The course also covers the complex sociopolitical history of research on culture contact and colonialism, as well as a critical review of contemporary theory and methods.
