Special Topics in Art History; Depth and Surface in Modern and Contemporary Art

Class meets at the Phillips Collection, University of Maryland Center for Art and Knowledge, Center Conference Room(CCR), 1600 21st Street, NW, Washington, DC 20009. This course addresses the uncertain position of pictorial depth and material surface in modern and contemporary art since 1945. It will focus primarily on abstract painting, Pop art, photorealist painting and experimental film, video and computer art from the fifties, sixties, and seventies.
