Chinese Film and Culture

Covering works by Mainland, Taiwanese, and Hong Kong directors, from Kung Fu spectacles to revolutionary aesthetics, national to cosmopolitan discourses, and historical nostalgia to documentary interventions, the full breadth of the history of Chinese cinema from the early 20th century to date is surveyed. Above all, the question of what "Chineseness" means in the global aesthetics of cinematic art is considered from diverse angles. Taught in English.
