Electromagnetic Waves and Applications

Prerequisite: ENEE381; or students who have taken courses with comparable content may contact the department. Review of Maxwell's equations: potentials, EM energy and momentum, EM plane waves. Properties of waves: dispersion, group velocity, diffraction, the ray optic limit. Waves in media: left-handed media, anisotropic media, wave guides, fibers, cavities. Radiation: antennas, Cherenkov radiation, radiation by accelerated charges, scattering. Additional topics: Wave chaos, Special Relativity.
