Examines the campaigns to memorialize Confederate soldiers, Confederate leaders, and the Confederate cause that filled the landscape of the U.S. South with monuments. Particular attention to the Lost Cause movement of which the monuments were a part, including the leading organizations, the multiple activities in which they were engaged, and the cultural dominance they achieved. Also considers the social, political, ideological, and racial contexts of the movement as it changed over time and the counter-memories that challenged and sometimes directly contested Confederate memorialization.
