Investigating Topics in Israel Studies; Tzahal: The Israeli Military in State, Society, and its Middle Eastern Context

Cross-listed with GVPT368F. Credit only granted for ISRL349G or GVPT368F. This course offers an introduction to general concepts of civil- military relations with a strong focus on the Israeli case. Situating Israel within the Middle East context, the course readings and class discussions will include comparative references to major regional players, such as Egypt, Turkey, Iran, and the Arab Gulf States. The military is a salient feature of all Middle Eastern states; we will explore how Israel both resembles and differs from other states in the region regarding the role of its military and of civil-military relations.
