News Coverage of Specialized Topics; Lynching and the Press

This course will study how the news media covered lynching from 1789 to 1963 and will contribute to an ongoing academic research project and article. Students will classify and analyze hundreds of news articles toexplore how the media framed lynching events, portrayed lynching victims, and described he role of law enforcement at lynching events. During the course of the semester, students will engage in historical research, content analysis, database creation and management, and computational textual analysis.
