Chemistry of Energetic Materials

Recommended: Background in general chemistry is strongly desired. Credit only granted for: ENPM683 or ENPM808Q. Formerly: ENPM808Q.An introduction to the chemistry of energetic materials (explosives, propellants, and pyrotechnics), organized by traditional functional groups. Primary and secondary explosives, including the properities and syntheses of nitrate esters, nitramines, and nitro compounds, as well as other energetic compunds will be discussed. Other topics discussed are: crystallization, polymorphism, sensitivity, and various explosive and propellant compositions.
