Special Topics - M.A. Level; Exiled from Germany

Cross-listed with GERS689E. Credit will be only granted for GERS689O or GERS689E. Studies the phenomena of exile as experienced in German-speaking cultures from the end of the nineteenth century to the present. Study of how a range of writers, intellectuals, and filmmakers did or did not come to terms with their mostly unchosen paths of exile, and how their responsesare reflected in the form and content of their work. Works studied include those by Hannah Arendt, Bertolt Brecht, Barbara Honigman, Christian Petzold, Joseph Roth, W.G. Sebald, Anna Seghers, and Stefan Zweig, among others. Taught in German.
