MATH274

History of Mathematics

Prerequisite: MATH120, MATH130, MATH136, or MATH140; or must have completed MATH220. An overview of aspects in the history of mathematics from its beginning in the concrete problem solving of ancient times through the development of abstraction in the 19th and 20th centuries. The course considers both mathematical ideas and the context in which they developed in various civilizations around the world. MATH 274 cannot satisfy a CMSC major requirement.
