Special Topics in Iberian and Latin American Studies; Crime and Impunity in Latin American Fiction and Film

Prerequisites: SPAN331, SPAN332, SPAN333, SPAN361, SPAN362, or SPAN363; or permission of instructor. With special emphasis on texts and films from Mexico, Central America, and the United States, this course will question how crime is defined by placing it into the context of social justice, resistant politics, and US hemispheric interventions into Latin America's politics, economics, and culture. Topics of special interest include US-sponsored coups and other disruptions, insurgency and counterinsurgency, migration, and the US-Mexico border. We will study novels, stories, essays, poetry, testimonials, feature films, and documentaries.
