Special Topics in Latin American Civilization; Latin American Comics: Political and Social Criticism from the Margins

Prerequisite: SPAN333, SPAN361, SPAN331, SPAN332, SPAN362, or SPAN363 This course studies a selection of twentieth and twenty-first century comics and comic strips from different countries in Latin America. Along with the particular characteristics of sequential art within visual culture, we will explore the significance of this alternative narrative mode and medium, and its incisive humorous and satirical criticism of power, politics and society.
