| Thomas Mauriello CCJS320 Expecting an A Anonymous 12/12/2025 | He wrote the entire class and textbook himself, so he knows what he's talking about. He has a lot of experience and connections, which are helpful for internships and jobs. He is super nice, and his assignments are pretty fair. It was a super fun class, even though some assignments were kinda hard. |
| Thomas Mauriello CCJS318C Expecting an A admin 05/06/2024 | CCJS318C is one of the best CCJS courses I have taken thus far! Mauriello is very educated, engaging, and funny, he offers you multiple opportunities to meet with him via Zoom to ensure you are prepared for all of your speeches, and he gives very relevant feedback! Grades are based on 4 quizzes, 2 prepared speeches, multiple impromptu speeches, and reflections each class as well as attendance. Even if you are not comfortable with public speaking, I highly recommend this class, as you will certainly leave the semester feeling much more confident in your speaking abilities, and will have learned a lot from the guest speakers! |
| Thomas Mauriello CCJS318C Expecting an A Anonymous 12/18/2023 | Professor Mauriello is an objectively great professor. The course I took met once a week for two and a half hours and during class, I genuinely felt engaged. He has experience in and a clear passion for public speaking, which shows in the content and presentation of his lectures. I also felt that he genuinely attempted to know each of his students and see them students improve, giving every person constructive and achievable feedback. For CCJS318C, Professor Mauriello requires purchasing a textbook he has written on which there are weekly reading quizzes--this is definitely essential to do well in the class, not only because of the weight of the quizzes but also because it outlines the specific requirements he has for speeches such as slide development. |
| Thomas Mauriello CCJS320 Anonymous 05/03/2023 | Professor Mauriello is cool professor. He goes in depth of the most common forensic techniques that are used to solve crimes. You won't have any midterms or final exams, but you will have a presentation at the end of the semester which is based on a mock crime scene. The class is split into 3 groups and go to 3 separate mock crime scenes to practice collecting and processing evidence. Each student has a different role (i.e. photographer, fingerprint examiner, firearms expert). The class isn't too hard and as long as you stay on top of the work, you'll be fine. Be extra sure to take the weekly quizzes because they make up a good chunk of the grade. If you're into shows like Forensic Files, take this class. |
| Thomas Mauriello CCJS318C admin 12/08/2022 | CCJS318C is a new public speaking course in the CCJS department. I took it the first semester it was taught, Fall 2022. Professor Mauriello is a laid back, kind, and super knowledgeable professor. His expertise shines through his lectures and I really enjoyed having him as a professor. However, the course was not what I thought it would be. I expected to practice speaking more but instead, we only had about 2 formal speeches the whole semester. Most classes were either guest speakers (who, for the most part, were boring) and lectures on material that we didn’t need to or have to know. As for exams, the course quizzes were pretty easy and are based on Mauriello’s new public speaking book, which wasn’t an interesting read and had information with little to no relevance to college students. Yes, this was the first time the course was taught and I’m sure it will improve. But for that to happen, there needs to be public speaking every class and less book/lecture. So if you’re not the most confident public speaker and only want to practice a little, maybe this class is for you. Otherwise, maybe a COMMs course is your best best to practice speaking. |
| Thomas Mauriello CCJS320 Expecting a B+ Anonymous 05/21/2022 | One of the best professors I’ve had at UMD, super funny and smart and wants students to do well. Strict enough to encourage you to work hard but also very understanding. I loved this class and plan to take his public speaking class as well. |
| Thomas Mauriello CCJS320 Expecting an A- Anonymous 11/08/2021 | Mauriello is an amazing. If you want to learn in depth about forensic science you need to take this class. You are assigned to 1/3 crime scenes for the entire semester, and each person in the group gets assigned to a certain role for your crime. The crime scenes are super cool because you physically get to go to an area that he set up on campus that mimics a crime he designed. It is a very hands on course where you learn so much but everything is fun and interesting. There are module quizzes and activities due every week but the work takes one hour max and it definitely worth it to take the course. You can tell he LOVES teaching his class and really cares about his students understanding the material. If I could take this class again just for fun I would! |

It was not manually verified and may not follow our review standards. | Mauriello is awesome, he's like a Bostonian version of Hamill. The class itself is very fun. You learn a lot about the different parts of forensics. There's even a firearms demo where you get to shoot blanks! He crams a lot of info into the few short weeks you have in summer school, and while you might gloss over some of the hairy details you still get the good stuff. Homework is very easy, he grades it based on completion not accuracy. We had one exam which made up 60% of our grade but it was very easy. Honestly, just go to class, do the homework and read the OJ Simpson Issues and you'll be fine. If you get less than an A, you didn't try hard. If you get less than a B, you tried really hard to do badly. |

It was not manually verified and may not follow our review standards. | His class is awesome! A must take at UMD. He is funny and very responsive to the students concerns. Guest lectures on polygraphs and firearms are awesome. The homework can be tedious and the exams are different than 60 MC, but it's all worth it. |

I would've rather taken it during the regular semester than the summer. |

It was not manually verified and may not follow our review standards. | I expected an A but earned a B. It was summer session so they did not give out anything to let me know where my grade stood. But, I guess the final exam wasn't too well. Good thing about the class was there was only one final, the lab exercises were fun, and Dr. M is just hilarious. |
