Special Topics in Israel Studies; Studying and Simulating War and Peace in the Middle East

The Middle East seems plagued by endless fighting as well as multiple and largely less successful efforts to achieve peace. Is that perception true? If so, why is this region so conflict-prone and peace-averse? What factors motivate, constrain, and shape these conflicts and peace processes? How can policymakers influence war and peace in the Middle East? This course will provide students with the necessary tools and knowledge to understand the dynamics of contemporary politics in the Middle East with an emphasis on armed conflict and efforts to make peace. Through various case studies and simulations, students will get the opportunity to become familiar with diplomatic, political, and military strategies at the heart of ongoing events.
