Topics in Syntax; FOCUS-SENSITIVE PARTICLES IN LANGUAGE ACQUISTION

Alternating face-to-face/online class meetings, see the instructor for details. Previous literature reports mixed findings on the acquisition of focus-sensitive particles (e.g., only, also, even): while spontaneous speech data reveal children's early production of the particles, experimental data reveal a relative delay in their comprehension in various languages. In this seminar, we will discuss the theoretical aspects of these particles and evaluate the methods and results of previous studies in order to better understand what it is that children know (or do not know) about these particles.
