Topics in Syntax; The Meaning of Melody and Stress

How does speech melody and stress affect the meaning of what we say? In this seminar, we will address this question by investigating two related areas of linguistics: the semantics and pragmatics of both focus and intonational contour. We will read primary and secondary literature in the subfields of semantics, pragmatics, and prosody, with a focus on linguistic theory, and including some experimental work.
