Seminar: Theory and Performance Studies; Sistah Outsider: Contemporary Black Women Playwrights

In this course, we will critically examine the plays of contemporary Black women playwrights, from Lorraine Hansberry's groundbreaking play A Raisin in the Sun to the recent works of Katori Hall and Dani Gurira. We will engage critical essays and other mediums, such as film and music , as catalysts to look in-depth at the intersections of identities: race , class, gender, and sexuality. Topics include Black Womens movements, Black feminist/womanist thought, political and social institutions, self -identity and social status, and issues related to changing social structures.
