Seminar: Theory and Performance Studies; Popular Performance & Popular Culture

Students will examine multidisciplinary modes of cultural production in various mediums including but not limited to theatre, performance art, film, visual art, advertising, and music video. Through the lens of performance, the class will interrogate how cultural products operate asperformances of contemporary everyday life. Topics may include the cultural logic of Beyonc, sports culture, urbanity, indigenous water protectors and protest, and hip hop culture among other objects that occupy the national imagination questioning what they reveal about the popular body and its political status.
