| Richard Engstrom GVPT170 admin 05/20/2025 | A trip of a class, but definitely worth it. |
| Richard Engstrom GVPT170 Expecting an A+ Anonymous 05/05/2025 | Haven't gone to class more than 3 times this whole semester. Grades consist of 3 online exams and then a simple online study and discussion participation. Go to your discussion sections and you'll do just fine. |
| Richard Engstrom GVPT170 Expecting an A admin 04/11/2025 | Dr.Engstrom teaches in a way that feels less of being taught at and more of a conversation. GVPT170 is far from being hard but he ensured that there was no room to misunderstand or not understand the content we were being taught. I also thoroughly enjoyed our discussion sections as he always creates topics that force you to really think about your values, and he enjoys seeing people debate (in a respectful manner of course). Overall I love this class and think he is one of the best professors in the GVPT department. I'm hoping to take his 460 course next semester as well, great professor! |
| Richard Engstrom GVPT461 Expecting an A Anonymous 05/18/2022 | Honestly, one of the best classes taken at UMD. Format is simple- read half a book, watch a short vid or two and discuss in class. Each week someone presents and you get points for discussion. Main grade is 3 midterm type exams, all written. Not too bad. You want to read the books, trust me. If you do not, you will not do well. Final project is a big paper (for our semester we got a presentation to do), so requires some effort. Overall, if you like the format of the class, worth it, however if you do not like talking much, a little less. Actually learned a lot, and books were very interesting. |
| Richard Engstrom GVPT460 Expecting an A Anonymous 01/04/2021 This review was submitted while most classes were online during the COVID-19 pandemic. It may not be indicative of a regular semester. | Professor Engstrom taught GVPT460 in a really interesting way: we would read part of a book each week and the discuss for a few hours every Thursday night. I personally like to read, so this “book club” format was nice (though none of the books were very long so I imagine it wouldn’t be bad for those who like reading less than I do). He mostly facilitated conversation, often offering interesting insight, but also let the class do most of the talking when we were on to something. The class is three or so hours but he also made sure to give us breaks. Tests were not difficult either. |
